Straight answers about how care works at Synergy Mental Health, and what to expect from therapy and medication.

My practice

Booking, insurance & visits

Are you a psychiatrist or a nurse practitioner?

I'm a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) with an MSN from the University of Pennsylvania. In New Jersey I'm licensed and certified to diagnose and prescribe psychiatric medications to children, adolescents and adults, and I provide therapy as well.

Do you take insurance?

Yes. I process insurance through Headway and Alma and am in network with Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of NJ, Aetna, UnitedHealthcare, Optum, Oxford, Oscar, UMR, Meritain, Surest, GEHA and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts. Both show your estimated cost before you book.

What are your self-pay rates?

$395 for the initial evaluation and $250 for standard follow-up visits. Mastercard and Visa are accepted. The 15-minute phone consultation is always free.

How do I book the free 15-minute consult?

Use the booking button anywhere on this site. It opens my self-scheduling calendar on Headway, where you can choose a time for a no-charge phone consultation. If your plan is with Alma, you can book a free consultation on my Alma profile instead.

Are appointments online?

Most care is virtual, by HIPAA-compliant video from your home or any private location in New Jersey. If you're prescribed a stimulant for ADHD, prescribing rules require periodic in-person visits, which happen at the Marlton office on Route 73, with video visits in between.

What are your hours?

Monday and Wednesday 9 am to 9 pm, and Saturday and Sunday mornings by appointment. Tuesday, Thursday and Friday are closed.

What ages do you treat?

Children from age 6, preteens, teens and adults.

Do you prescribe ADHD stimulants?

Yes, when they're clinically warranted, as well as non-stimulant options. Stimulants are controlled medications, so I follow current federal and New Jersey prescribing rules.

Can I see you for medication only and keep my therapist?

Yes. Many patients see me for medication management while continuing therapy elsewhere, and I'm happy to coordinate with your permission.

Do you offer therapy in the same visit as medication management?

Yes. I specialize in combining medication management with talk therapy for children and adults in a single appointment, to save you time and money.

Therapy

Therapy & medication

How can therapy help me?

Therapy can provide support, problem-solving skills and better coping strategies for depression, anxiety, relationship troubles, unresolved childhood issues, grief, stress, body image and creative blocks. Benefits include a better understanding of yourself and your values, healthier relationships, new ways to cope with stress and anxiety, managing anger, grief and depression, better communication, changing old patterns, and greater self-esteem and confidence. What you get from therapy depends on how actively you use the process and put what you learn into practice.

Do I really need therapy? I can usually handle my problems.

Everyone goes through challenging situations, and while you've navigated other difficulties, there's nothing wrong with seeking extra support. Therapy is for people with enough self-awareness to realize they could use a helping hand, and that's something to be admired. It gives you tools to avoid triggers, redirect damaging patterns and overcome whatever challenges you face.

Why do people go to therapy, and how do I know if it's right for me?

Some people are going through a major life transition such as unemployment, divorce or a new job, or aren't handling stress well. Others want help with low self-esteem, depression, anxiety, addictions, relationship problems, spiritual conflicts or creative blocks. Others are ready to learn more about themselves or be more effective with their goals. In short, people seeking therapy are ready to meet their challenges and make changes.

What is therapy like?

Every person's therapy is different. In general, we'll discuss what's happening in your life, relevant history, and progress or insights since the last session. Therapy can be short-term for a specific issue or longer-term for deeper patterns. You'll get more from it by participating actively, and I may suggest things to do between sessions, like reading, journaling, noticing particular behaviors or taking action on your goals.

What about medication vs. psychotherapy?

Medication alone usually isn't the long-term answer to emotional pain. Therapy addresses the causes of distress and the patterns that curb progress. For many people, a combination of medication and therapy is the right course, and pairing them can help you feel better faster. Because I'm a prescriber and a therapist, we can decide together what's best for you.

How does insurance work, and what should I ask my carrier?

Call your insurance carrier and ask: What are my mental health benefits? What is the coverage amount per session? How many sessions does my plan cover? How much does my plan pay for an out-of-network provider? Is approval required from my primary care physician? If you book through Headway or Alma, they also check your coverage and show an estimate.

Is what I say confidential?

Yes. Confidentiality is one of the most important parts of treatment, and information isn't shared without your written permission, for example with your physician. By law, exceptions include suspected abuse or neglect of children, dependent adults or elders, and situations where someone is in serious danger of harming themselves or has threatened to harm another person.
